Celine Dion
Celine Dion was the youngest of 14 children. She grew up in the Quebec town of Charlemagne and lived in abject poverty. With her five-octave vocal range, Dion rocketed to stardom in the English-speaking world after the release of her 1990 album Unison. As of 2010, Dion has recorded 10 English-language albums and 13 French-language albums which have combined to sell more than 200 million copies worldwide. She's one of the most successful female singers in pop music history and the best-selling Canadian artist of all time.
When Dion was 12-years-old she sent manager René Angélil an audition tape. As the legend goes, when Angélil first head Dion sing in person he cried. Angélil mortgaged his home to finance Dion's first two albums--one of pop songs and the other of Christmas songs. His gamble paid off because the teenage-Dion quickly became a star in the French-speaking world.
After taking some time off to reinvent herself (i.e. learn English and get a makeover), Dion released her breakthrough album, Unison, and her first hit single, "Where Does My Heart Beat Now." She followed that effort up in 1992 with the release of her self-titled album and second recorded in English. This Grammy and Academy Award winning opus featured the song "Beauty and the Beast," a duet with Peabo Bryson.
In 1993, Dion released The Colour of My Love which reached number four in the U.S. and sold more than 20 million units. She finally reached the top spot on the U.S. album chart with her next release, 1996's Falling Into You. That offering sold 32 million copies. Her 1997 album, Let's Talk About Love, achieved similar success thanks in large part to the smash-hit single, and theme to the 1997 blockbuster movie Titanic, "My Heart Will Go On." Interestingly enough, both Dion and Titanic director James Cameron had to be persuaded to get behind the song. Despite their hesitation, the track eventually became one of the best-selling singles in pop history.
In 1999, Dion took a break from her career to start a family with her manager-turned-husband, Angélil. Who just happens to be 26-years her senior. Dion emerged from her hiatus with her 2002 album, A New Day Has Come. Also in 2002, Dion began a three-year (expanded to five-year) run performing five nights a week at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Initially criticized as a bad career move, Dion's Las Vegas show grossed over $400 million and was seen by almost 3 million fans.
