About the City of Las Vegas
Las Vegas became an official city in 1911. Of course back then tourists weren't coming from all over the world to test their luck on a Las Vegas Strip casino or to take in a Cirque du Soleil show. Las Vegas began life as a railroad town—a stopover for people heading to California or a staging base for miners. In 1931, gambling was legalized and the city began its journey to what it is today. In the 1940's and 1950's, the mob moved in and took over the casinos. However, in the 1960's Howard Hughes purchased much of the city, and with the help of the feds running the mob out of town, Las Vegas became a legitimate tourist destination. While it's no longer the gambling capital of world—that distinction now belongs to Macau—"Sin City" is still one of the world's top destinations for adult entertainment.
