About Zarkana

When Cirque du Soleil was readying the new show Zarkana, they had to seek out a rehearsal space sizable enough to match their premier venues, Radio City Music Hall in New York City and Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow. After a lenghthy search, Orlando's Amway Arena was chosen and rehearsals began in February of 2010. Previews for the production began at Radio City on June 9, 2011 with an opening night set for June 29, 2011.

The show's story centers on a magician, alone in an abandoned building. His love and, along with her, his magic have left him. With pleas and prayers, the magician is transported into a strange and mesmerizing new world. There, Zarkana (a fusion of “bizarre” and “arcana”) begins his quest to recover his powers.

Re-imagining the variety show tradition as only Cirque du Soleil can, the Zarkana spectacle features hoop dancing, parallel bars, trampolines, the wheel of death, contortion, trapeze, and more. Internationally acclaimed and beloved director François Girard guides some 71 artists from around the world to fulfill the Zarkana vision. He previously helmed Cirque's ZED.

The show's composer and musical director is Nick Littlemore, a protégé of Sir Elton John, while Debra Brown serves as choreographer and Alan Hranitelj designs the costumes. The multitude of set and props are handled by Stéphane Roy.
