The Orange Bowl
The Orange Bowl is an annual college football game
that is usually played on January 1 in Miami, Florida. The game
was played at the Orange Bowl Stadium from 1935 to 1995, and was
moved to Dolphins Stadium in 1996. The corporate title sponsor
has been FedEx (formerly Federal Express) since 1989 and the official
title of the game is the FedEx Orange Bowl. For a short period
of time ending in 1992 the game was co-sponsored by IBM and its
OS/2 operating system.
From 1968, the game featured the champion of the
former Big Eight Conference (whose members formed the basis of
the current Big 12 Conference). Since 1998, however, with the
creation of the Bowl Championship Series system, team selection
for the Orange Bowl is now tied into the other three BCS Bowls.
As one of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) bowl games (the others
being the Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose Bowls), the Orange Bowl hosts
the national championship game once every four years under the
BCS system (as it did January 4, 2005).
The Orange Bowl Stadium
The Orange Bowl Stadium is a stadium in the City
of Miami, Florida, near downtown Miami, Florida. It is the home
stadium for the University of Miami Hurricanes football team.
It also hosted the Miami Dolphins until the opening of Dolphins
Stadium in 1987. The Orange Bowl college football bowl game is
named for the stadium, although it has been played at Dolphins
Stadium since 1996. The Minor League Baseball Miami Marlins played
certain games in the Orange Bowl from 1956 to 1960.
In addition to football, the stadium also hosts
concerts and other public events. The stadium has a regular capacity
of 74,177, and can seat up to 82,000 for concerts and other events
where additional seating can be placed on the playing field. The
stadium has an open east end that has a view of the city skyline.
The stadium was built by the City of Miami Public Works Department.
Construction began in 1936. The stadium opened for Miami Hurricanes
football on December 10, 1937. It opened to the NFL on September
2, 1966. The stadium has also hosted a multitude of events including
concerts by The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen,
Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Marlboro Soccer Cup, an AC Milan
Soccer Game, some 1996 Summer Olympics soccer games, several NFL
Super Bowls, the former North-South Shrine Game, and the namesake
New Year's Day Orange Bowl Classic as mentioned above.
With the announcement of the new Florida Marlins
Stadium, to be built on the east side of the Orange Bowl for the
2008 baseball season, the City of Miami and University of Miami
have announced that a major renovation of the Orange Bowl will
occur which will lower the seating capacity, modernize much of
the stadium, and make it better-suited for both American football
and soccer.
