Ventriloquist Jeff Dunham has been cited as contributing more to the art form than any other performer since the glory days of Edgar Bergen. Despite being in one of the non-mainstream comedic forms, Dunham was called "America's favorite comedian" by Slate.com and is consistently one of the top-grossing stand-up acts in the U.S. according to Pollstar magazine. All told, his DVDs have sold more than four million copies and counting. A native of Dallas, Texas, Dunham spent his formative years during the Bergen era. At the ripe young age of 8, Jeff was gifted with a Mortimer Snerd doll by Santa Claus. That's all he needed to dive into honing his craft. Practicing with a mirror, Dunham learned Bergen's routines bit by bit. He also utilized how-to books and records to help him along. When he was only in sixth grade, the young Dunham starting attending the annual gathering of ventriloquists that is the Vent Haven ConVENTion in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. One year, Jeff met Jimmy Nelson, another legend in the world of ventriloquism and one of Dunham's heroes. After a number of years of competing at the ConVENTion, Dunham was forced into retirement by the event's organizers due to his level of talent. He was then known as a "retired champion" and honored in the Vent Haven Museum along with masters of the form like Señor Wences and Bergen. Continuing to pursue his career, a teen-aged Dunham performed at local events and in a handful of television commercials. Dunham's sidekick characters were so well-known that he co-authore a column in his high school newspaper with one of them. Claiming it was a way to get free promo pictures, Dunham even posed for his yearbook photos with his dummies. Once at Baylor University, Jeff used his weekends to shoot around the U.S. performing at a variety of events. Upon his college graduation, the next obvious step was to head west – to Los Angeles – and make ventriloquism his full-time gig. A 1990 appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson was capped off with a wave to join Johnny on the couch. That was a treasured endorsement for any comedian, and Dunham figured he had it made after that. However, it would be another decade or so before things would really start to take off for Dunham. Once the century turned, Dunham really got going. His first television special was a 2003 Comedy Central Presents. From there on out, Dunham regularly offered up his shows for DVD release. Dunham's discography includes: Dunham's dummies include: Critics have always been lukewarm on Jeff's work, perhaps due to their position of ridicule in some of his acts. Dunham claims, though, to be an equal opportunity offender, making fun of pretty much everyone with the same veracity. Despite that, fans have long-loved Dunham and twice voted him Ventriloquist of the Year as well as the champ at Comedy Central's Stand-Up Showdown in 2008.
