Artie Lange's summer 2005 meltdown
In early June 2005, Lange began missing work at the Howard Stern Show, prompting concerns of a possible relapse into the substance abuse issues that had affected him earlier. Lange confessed he was under considerable stress from shooting a new film and maintaining his daily appearances on the show. While Lange missed several days of work in early June 2005, a second incident on July 27, 2005 triggered another Lange meltdown. During an on-air segment entitled "Hottest Chick - Biggest Fan" where women answered trivia questions while in bikinis one of the contestants, Christine (who has appeared on numerous occassions on the Sirius program "Super Fan Round Table") brought in a guy named "Keith" who claimed to have slept with Lange's sister, Stacey. Lange is extremely protective of his sister and lashed out at Christine on the air.

Artie Lang's Outburst
Lange's on air outburst included his revelation that he did not plan on signing a longterm contract with The Howard Stern Show and Sirius Satellite Radio because he felt there would be opportunities to star in motion pictures and possibly create a television show. During this on-air "outburst", Lange stated he would only do what he wanted and had stopped seeing a psychiatrist, which he said was a decision he made only to please Howard Stern. Lange's tirade included comments such as "Artie's gonna (gotta?) do what Artie's gonna (gotta?) do" and similar aversions that no one was the 'boss' of Artie. Lange also described his behavior as being akin to a "gambler's mentality." Lange subsequently missed the next two days of work, but returned the following Monday.

Once back, Lange revealed that he was seeking professional help and quit drinking for a few months. By September of 2005, Lange had returned to drinking, especially at comedy gigs. In November 2005 Artie changed his mind and decided to go with Stern and his crew to Sirius Satellite Radio. Lange also revealed that he and Gary Dell'Abate were approached by Infinity Broadcasting about replacing Howard Stern on terrestrial radio with their own show during the Summer of 2005. Lange was supposedly offered an exorbitant sum of money (roughly $5 million) to defect. This has caused speculation that Lange's absences and self-doubt were triggered by the dilemma over whether to leave the Howard Stern Show.

Other theories center on the pressure Lange felt from Stern, who had suggested that Lange shoot "Beer League" during various vacation weeks during the summer and seemed somewhat annoyed at Lange's request to take additional time off to shoot a movie. Stern noted that he starred in "Private Parts" while working full-time and saw no reason why Lange could not do the same thing. On February 24, 2006, Lange described this event as a mental breakdown caused by stress.

How Long Will Lange Stay?
Interestingly, little has been said about Lange's suggestion that he might only go over to Sirius for a short period of time, although the issue was raised recently when Lange took off two days of work to film an episode of the HBO sitcom "Entourage." On the July 20, 2006 episode of the "Wrap Up Show" it was disclosed that Lange had a clause in his contract that prohibited him from taking time off of work for the first year of the Sirius contract and that Lange approached Stern to get Stern's blessing to tape the show, the contract clause notwithstanding.

Artie's Understanding
It appears that an "understanding" exists that Lange's value as a show regular is far greater than slavish devotion to a contract term and the Stern family is willing to allow Lange his occassional forays into the Hollywood limelight as a method of both increasing interest in the show and placating the sometimes volatile Lange.
