Larry the Cable Guy
Daniel Lawrence Whitney (born February 17, 1963
in Pawnee City, Nebraska), better known by the stage name Larry
the Cable Guy, is one of the co-stars on the Blue Collar Comedy
Tour and the subsequent series Blue Collar TV. He is also the
voice of Mater the tow truck in Pixar's animated movie Cars. Larry
was raised on a pig farm in Pawnee City, Nebraska in a conservative,
traditional, and church going environment.
Larry the Cable Guy became a radio comedian, working
with Ron and Fez on the syndicated "Ron and Ron Show,"
before hooking up with the Blue
Collar Boys. His trademarks are "redneck" style
humor delivered while speaking in an affected thick Southern accent,
recounting bizarre stories about his "family", and the
phrases "Git-R-Done!", "Lord, I apologize fer that
one there, and please be with all the starving Pygmies down there
in New Guinea!", "What the hell is this, Russia?",
"That's Right", and "Do you believe that?".
Often at his acts, some woman yells out that she loves him. He
usually responds by saying "I told you to wait in the truck"
- a line cribbed from Tom Waits.
His often-heard-of fictional family includes:
A grandma, who gets the "walkin' farts"
A grandpa, who uses a device to speak due to throat cancer
A brother, who is not only deaf, but has Tourette syndrome (and
often flips the bird while speaking in sign language)
A sister, who is very overweight; this sister was also immortalized
in a sketch on Blue Collar TV
A sister, DeeWayne, who has an enormous number of moles; Larry
has nicknamed her "Old Moley", "Holy Moley",
and "Guacamoley"
The moley sister's baby, whom Larry has nicknamed "Rolie
Polie Moley"
A dog named Wilson whose tail was docked a little too long!
A common comedic staple of Larry the Cable Guy is the "Here's
your sign" routine. Most people have thought, at one time
or another, that this was originated by Jeff Foxworthy. Whitney
perfected this sketch while on tour with Foxworthy and Engval
and has become a staple of blue collar comedy ever since.
In a 2005 Rolling Stone interview, comedian David
Cross charged that Whitney's act was anti-gay, racist, and chock-full
of "anti-intellectual pride." In an interview, Whitney
responded to common criticisms of him as racist or insensitive
by saying those people can "kiss my ass". David Cross
responded with an open letter on his website defending his remarks.
Whitney has not spoken out about the feud since.
Dan Whitney himself has become somewhat of an enigma;
official biographies of him describe only the fictional life of
Larry the Cable Guy, and he almost never speaks out of his 'Larry'
voice. Some attribute the derivation of his name to his prior
profession, but he actually got the name after his real grandmother
gave him a cable-knit sweater for Christmas. "I just got-'er-done,"
she said. A would-be-revealing documentary about his backstage
life during stand-up tours was planned but then dropped from the
"Git-R-Done" DVD. Many critics have pointed out that
his fictional persona may be misleading to his intended audience
who go for a "blue-collar-just-like-me" experience,
when in fact he is neither from the south nor blue-collar, and
in fact is a very well-paid comedian.
Larry the Cable Guy's Success
But Larry the Cable Guy is undaunted. It was when 'Larry' was
on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Show on radio that Larry
got the most exposure. He then became a regular on Jeff Foxworthy's
Country Countdown Show and Larry was soon in 14 markets across
the US. Jeff Foxworthy invited the comic to join his Blue Collar
Comedy Tour in 2000. This tour grossed $15 million, sold more
than 1 million copies when released on DVD, and turned Larry the
Cable Guy into a huge star.
Recently, he was featured in Gretchen Wilson's music
video for the song "All Jacked Up", playing dual roles
as himself and a transvestite bar patron. The album of the same
name was released at the end of September of 2005.
