There are some bands that are considered rock and roll royalty, and Fleetwood Mac most certainly falls into that category. The band has been around in one form or another since the mid-'60s, and they have evolved through the decades to keep generations of fans entertained.
Fleetwood Mac featured music industry nobility from the very beginning. Guitarist Peter Green had once been a replacement guitarist with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers for the legendary Eric Clapton, while drummer Mick Fleetwood had performed in a band that featured Rod Stewart on vocal. Bassist John McVie joined soon after.
As the band found their way through the labyrinth of the blues-rock world, the lineup changed and shifted constantly as members came and went. The early '70s were a tumultuous time both for the group and for popular music in general, but in late 1974 a lineup change was made that would eventually propel Fleetwood Mac into international stardom.
That lineup change came in the form of two new members, namely guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and his then-girlfriend, singer Stevie Nicks. Nicks was not initially slated to be invited into the band; she was included only on Buckingham's insistence that he would not join unless Nicks could join, too.
Accepting both into the group turned out to be an inspired choice. Nicks's unusual vocal tone gave the band a unique and recognizable sound that carried well on the airwaves and led to several radio hits. The eponymous Fleetwood Mac album came out in 1975 and was a number one hit in the United States. It was followed up by Rumours in 1977, which was even more popular, and by that time, Fleetwood Mac had become a household name.
