Gorillaz Bio

In 1998, Damon Albarn of alt-rock staples Blur and British cartoonist Jamie Hewlett teamed up to create Gorillaz, a project that combines comic-book characters with real music. The animated band members are 2D (lead vocals and keyboards), Murdoc Niccals (bass), Noodle (guitar and vocals), and Russel Hobbs (drums). The idea was born as a commentary on the lack of substance Albarn and Hewlett were seeing on MTV.

Through music videos and an interactive website, the animated world of Gorillaz takes shape and comes to life. Musically, their sound is a mash-up of styles, including dub, hip hop, alternative rock, electronica, and pop.

Though "Ghost Train" was the first song ever recorded under the Gorillaz moniker circa 1999 (actually, Gorilla, at the time), the band's debut release came in 2000 with the Tomorrow Comes Today EP with a full-length eponymous album following in 2001. Four singles emerged: “Clint Eastwood,” "19-2000," "Tomorrow Comes Today," and "Rock the House."

By the end of the year, Gorillaz were making inroads and created a half-hour mockumentary entitled Charts of Darkness wherein a fictitious news reporter goes in search of Albarn and Hewlett only to find they've been locked up in a mental institution. The band also rounded out 2001 with the track “911,” a collaboration with rappers D12 and Terry Hall about the terrorist attacks of that day.

For 2002, G Sides, a collection of B-sides and EP cuts, was released internationally following a successful showing in Japan. With six award nominations to their credit, they appeared at the 2002 Brit Awards in 3D animation, but failed to win any of their categories.

Later that year, the DVD Phase One: Celebrity Take Down included the band's four Phase One promos, a video for "5/4," Charts of Darkness, five Gorilla Bitez, a tour of the website, and more. Plans for a feature film were abandoned due to the creators' ability to identify an appropriate script and studio partners.

"Feel Good Inc." was the lead-off single from the next Gorillaz album. It charted well in both the U.S. and the UK, nabbed a Grammy nomination, and found its way into Guitar Hero 5, PlayStation 2, and Rock Band.

The album, Demon Days, had some peaks and valleys in its sales, but rebounded on the strength of singles “DARE” and “Dirty Harry.” A fourth, double-sided cut – "Kids with Guns"/"El Mañana" – was also released. Despite the up-and-down chart action, the CD eventually sold over six million copies worldwide.

Gorillaz planned to utilize holograms for a big tour, but cost issues derailed the notion. Still, the technology was used when they performed "Feel Good Inc." with Madonna at the 2006 Grammy Awards.

The Phase Two: Slowboat to Hades DVD dropped in late 2006 along with Rise of the Ogre, the band's official illustrated autobiography. News of a revived film project resurfaced, stating that Hewlett and Albarn had found creative compadres in Terry Gilliam and Harvey Weinstein. Ultimately, the project was discarded once again, though a documentary of the Gorillaz evolution, entitled Bananaz. did come about in 2009.

The third Gorillaz studio album, Plastic Beach, got underway in late 2007. Featuring guests such as Mos Def, Mick Jones, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack, Lou Reed, De La Soul, and The Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music, the recording was a massive undertaking that would not be released until 2010.

In January of that year, Gorillaz were announced as the headliner at Coachella. The first single, “Stylo,” was also leaked on the Internet. The band's website was completely renovated to match the album's theme, including a new game called Escape to the Plastic Beach and short clips of each band member.

Subsequent singles were "On Melancholy Hill," "Superfast Jellyfish," and "Rhinestone Eyes."

Although Albarn and Hewlett are the only two consistent threads in the production that is Gorillaz, a number of musical talents have contributed as transient band members such as Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash, Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto, Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads, Phil Cornwell, Cass Browne, Simon Katz, Mike Smith, Junior Dan, Simon Tong, and more.
