About How Sweet the Sound
How Sweet the Sound started in 2007 in Memphis with a pilot program and expanded to 14 markets as of 2010 in a search for the nation's best church choir. The Verizon-backed project is a celebration of music, faith, and community, all of which intersects within a church choir.
To participate, choirs must be affiliated with a tax-exempt organization or church and have between 6 and 100 members performing on stage, all of whom must be at least 18. Two categories are designated based on group size: Few Voices (up to 35 members) and Many Voices (35 to 100 members).
Singing a song from the pre-approved selection list, the choirs first submit a video audition to be entered into the overall competition. From there, 16 winners advance into a regional round and with two regional winners earning $10,000 before going on to a national, grand finale round.
After beating out 10 other choirs in the 2009 competition finale in Detroit, the Atlanta West Pentecostal Church was crowned Best Church Choir in America and taking some $45,000 worth of cash and prizes home with them. Attendance for the event was nearly 13,000 people.
Chicago's Acme Missionary Baptist Church won the top honor in 2008. Atlanta West won the V Cast People's Choice Award in both 2008 and 2009.
For 2010, the regional events were held in Houston, Jacksonville, Memphis, Philadelphia, Newark, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Charlotte, Atlanta, St. Louis, Oakland, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C.
Judges have included gospel stars such as Marvin Sapp, Cece Winans, V. Michael McKay, Kelly Price, Dorinda Clark Cole, and Hezekiah Walker, while Grammy-winning producer Donald Lawrence served as the emcee for 2009 and 2010.
