About Lady Gaga

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta had nothing less than world domination in her sights when she burst onto the pop music scene as Lady Gaga. But it all started much earlier than that. Learning piano at age 4, the would-be Gaga starting writing songs at 13 and performing at open mic nights a year later.

High school allowed her the opportunity to participate in musicals such as Guys and Dolls and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. At 17, she earned early admission into New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Halfway through her sophomore year, she dropped out to pursue a career in music.

When she was only 19, the not-yet Gaga signed on with Def Jam Recordings, but was dropped after only a few months. Early projects included collaborations with RedOne and Grandmaster Melle Mel, as well as the formation of the Stefani Germanotta Band. Producer Rob Fusari saw and heard a bit of Freddie Mercury in her which led to the Lady Gaga moniker being boosted from Queen's song “Radio Ga Ga.”

In 2007, Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue kicked around New York City venues billed as "The Ultimate Pop Burlesque Rockshow." The performances garnered an invitation to join Lollapalooza that summer and rave reviews flowed.

Finding her style somewhere between avant-garde electonica and glam rock, Gaga was signed to an Interscope Records imprint when Fusari sent some demos to a record executive he knew. Under her Sony/ATV publishing deal, Gaga penned tunes for Britney Spears, Fergie, New Kids on the Block, and others.

Gaga made her own debut in 2008 with The Fame which climbed charts around the world, selling more than 14 million copies along the way. Smash singles came on like gangbusters with the number one “Just Dance” followed by the even more successful “Poker Face” and then “Paparazzi.”

Multiple Grammy and MTV Video award nominations ensued with two wins from each. Gaga also took her show on the road opening for NKOTB before headlining her own global trek. Proving that no one was untouched by the pop phenom, even Barbara Walters tagged Lady Gaga as one the "10 Most Fascinating People of 2009."

Pulling together another eight tunes, Gaga released The Fame Monster in November of 2009. More hits came in “Bad Romance,” “Telephone,” and “Alejandro,” all of which were massively successful and mildly controversial. The Grammy folks threw six more nominations on the pile and Gaga set out on her second world tour – The Monster Ball – which ran for more than a year and a half.

In 2010, Time magazine included Gaga on its list of the 100 most influential people of the year. Somewhere in between her lengthy Monster Ball tour runs, Gaga readied her second full studio album, Born This Way, for a May 23, 2011 street date.
