Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen is a Canadian singer-songwriter, artist, poet, and author. He is perhaps most well-known for his music and the exploration of numerous social issues through much of his work. For much of his musical career, Cohen has been rooted in the folk-pop-world music genre and has received a great deal of critical acclaim as a result of his vast vocal ability.

Lesser known is Cohen’s success as a songwriter, with more than 2,000 of his songs having been recorded and/or covered by other musical artists. He has been inducted in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In fact, during his induction ceremony into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, fellow musician Lou Reed said Cohen was in a small group of the “highest and most influential echelon of songwriters."

In addition to his various accolades and awards, Cohen was also made a “Companion of the Order of Canada,” which is the country’s highest civilian honor.

Some of Cohen’s most famous hits include the songs “Suzanne,” “Hallelujah,” and “First We Take Manhattan.” Many of his albums were met with critical acclaim, but little commercial success. In fact, for much of his career, Cohen’s music has sold relatively modestly in the U.S., while garnering a huge following (with the corresponding sales to match) in Europe and his native Canada.

While he has had many romantic entanglements, Cohen has never been married. He has two children and recently returned to touring after a 15-year absence.
