About the Band Muse

Queen's guitarist, Brian May, once said of Muse that they "let their madness show through, always a good thing in an artist." And so it goes with the English rock band that incorporates everything from electronica to classical music into their artistry.

Matthew Bellamy, Christopher Wolstenholme, and Dominic Howard were in separate bands during their time at Teignmouth Community College in the early 1990s. But fate soon intervened and brought them together.

Under the Baby Rocket Dolls moniker, the trio surprisingly won a local battle of the bands and decided to take the omen seriously. Renaming themselves Muse and relocating out of Teignmouth, the band slowly built a fan base through playing regular gigs in London and Manchester. A meeting with producer Dennis Smith led to their first studio recording and release of an eponymous EP.

Their sophomore outing, Muscle Museum EP, proved to be their real start when it climbed the indie singles chart and caught the ear of important British radio and press members. Smith, along with Safta Jaffery, formed Taste Media and recorded Muse's first three full albums.

A showing at the CMJ Music Festival in New York was the breakthrough Muse needed in the U.S. After a slate of meetings with executives in Los Angeles, the band eventually secured a deal with Maverick Records in 1998.

Stints opening for Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers helped Muse develop the energetic live show they are now known for.

Musically, Muse's sound has been shaped by their influences and experimentation. Bellamy's arpeggiated guitar work and pitch-shifting techniques are a direct descendant of his heroes, Jimi Hendrix and Tom Morello. His vocal style, replete with falsetto and vibrato, caused Maverick to shun the band's second album, Origin of Symmetry. After splitting with the label and signing with Warner, the record was finally released in the U.S.

Muse offered up their fifth album in 2009. The Resistance is the band's first foray into self-production. It debuted at the top of the charts in 19 countries, hitting number three in the States. One song, "United States of Eurasia," involved a global treasure hunt with flash drives hidden in seven major cities around the world. Once the content from each key was uploaded to the Muse website, the song was available for download. And now you can hear the musings of Muse live in concert again this year.
