About Arcade Fire

Canada, land of Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell, also knows how to churn out some very cool indie rock bands. Stars, Broken Social Scene, Memphis, The Dears, The New Pornographers, Metric, Wolf Parade, and, of course, Arcade Fire.

Husband and wife duo Win Butler and Régine Chassagne front the group of multi-talents known for switching instruments throughout their shows that came together in 2003 in Montreal.

Win's brother William Butler, along with Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury, Dane Mills, and Brendan Reed formed the original line-up who recorded and released the Us Kids Know EP.

That offering, coupled with their live shows, was enough to get a deal with Merge Records. Their full-length debut, Funeral, dropped in 2004. The album and its slightly somber mood allude to the deaths of relatives suffered by several band members leading up to the recording. The mood is reflected in songs like "Une année sans lumière" ("A Year Without Light"), "In the Backseat," and "Haïti," which is an ode to Chassagne's homeland.

Making – and even topping – a number of 'Best of' lists in both 2004 and 2005, Funeral set the Fire ablaze. It was Merge's highest-charting and biggest-selling album ever. Touring took the band well into 2005 with the album's success forcing quite a few venue upgrades to accommodate their ever-booming fan base.

Performances on Late Show with David Letterman and Top of the Pops, as well as at Coachella and Sasquatch!, all helped things along. It also didn't hurt that U2 used their tune “Wake Up” as pre-show music on their Vertigo Tour from 2005-2007. Arcade Fire subsequently got to open a few dates with the Irish mainstays. Award nominations and wins flooded in.

For their sophomore effort, Arcade Fire lit things up once again in early 2007. Neon Bible debuted at the top of the album charts in Canada and Ireland, and at number two in the U.S. and the UK. It was so warmly received, one critic dubbed it "among the best indie rock recordings of all time" and the band performed on Saturday Night Live. A year of touring commenced and continued through 2007 and into early 2008 spanning 19 countries.

For 2010, the band released a single in late May as a preview for the August street of their third record, The Suburbs.
