About Avril Lavigne

Growing up in small-town Ontario amongst devout Christians isn't necessarily a recipe for stardom. But it worked out pretty well for Avril Lavigne. Having dabbled in singing via her church and other local events, Lavigne eventually got a bit more serious, took up the guitar, and starting penning country songs.

It wasn't too long before Arista Records signed the 16 year old. A move to New York City found her under the guidance of music legend L.A. Reid. Various creative collaborations focused on Lavigne's country music past, but she was angling for a shift into rock. So, the label moved her to Los Angeles and set her up to work with the Matrix and others.

In the summer of 2002, Lavigne splashed on the scene with her Let Go debut from which four hits emerged in "Complicated," "Sk8er Boi," "I'm with You," and "Losing Grip." The record was multi-platinum within a couple of months, earned eight Grammy nods, and led Avril to international success, as well.

On her sophomore effort, Lavigne teamed up with a handful of singer/songwriters – including Chantal Kreviazuk and Evanescence's Ben Moody – to compose the material for 2004's Under My Skin.Avril leaned into her edgy appeal and tackled deeper themes on this one. Her efforts paid off as Under My Skin debuted at the top of the charts in 10 countries and sold more than a million copies in the U.S. in its first month.

Following all of that massive success, Lavigne and boyfriend Deryck Whibley (from Sum 41) were married in 2006. That same year, she also stepped into film, voicing a character in the animated Over the Hedge and appearing in Fast Food Nation.

Somehow, she also found time to work on her third record – The Best Damn Thing – which dropped in April of 2007. The brass and sass of tunes like "Girlfriend" saw Avril on familiar stylistic terrain. The song and album topped charts around the globe.

It would be several more years before Lavigne would issue a follow-up, 2011's Goodbye Lullaby, which draws much of its material from her 2009 divorce from Whibley.
