Celtic Woman

Celtic Woman is the brain child of David Downes, the former musical director of Michael Flatley's Riverdance. Downes wanted to capitalize on America's fascination with Celtic music by forming an all girl group that would sing both traditional Irish folk songs as well as modern standards.

The original incarnation of Celtic Woman, brought together in 2004, included Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Lisa Kelly,and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, as well as fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt. Due to family obligations and the desire to pursue solo careers, the Celtic Woman lineup has changed over the years. As of 2010, the group is comprised of Agnew, Kelly, Nesbitt, Lynn Hilary, and Alex Sharpe. At one time or another, Deirdre Shannon and Hayley Westenra have also been part of ensemble.

Celtic Woman released their self-titled debut in March of 2005. Issued alongside the compact disc was a DVD of group performing at The Helix in Dublin, Ireland. That performance was originally broadcasted on PBS and it propelled Celtic Woman to the top of Billboard's World Music chart. It stayed there until the band released Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration in October of 2006. In fact, at one point in their career Celtic Woman held the top three spots on Billboard's World Music album chart.

Other albums in their discography include 2007's Celtic Woman: New Journey; 2008's Celtic Woman: The Greatest Journey; and 2010's Celtic Woman: Songs from the Heart. Each album was released in connection with a performance DVD and all but Celtic Woman: The Greatest Journey was accompanied by a PBS special.

Celtic Woman has embarked on a number of international tours and the band has sold over 50 million albums worldwide. Their repertoire includes the songs "Danny Boy," "Orinoco Flow," "Spanish Lady," Scarborough Fair," and "You Raise Me Up."
