About Guns N' Roses
After Guns N' Roses released their first EP in 1986, they landed themselves a contract with Geffen Records. Although their Appetite for Destruction debut in 1987 took its time heating up, GNR set the world on fire soon enough with their own brand of hard rock.
The collective sounds made by lead vocalist Axl Rose, guitarists Izzy Stradlin and Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler have been described as everything from raw to refreshing. And their live performances never fell short.
After it had been out for about a year, Appetite for Destruction started to get some traction with the “Sweet Child O' Mine” single and video. Once MTV showed its support, the top of the Billboard charts were easy scores. The album's first single, “Welcome to the Jungle,” was then rereleased and, along with the third cut, “Paradise City,” made it into the Top 10.
For their next set, GNR recorded a handful of acoustic tracks to go along with their indie EP as GNR Lies. One single, “Patience,” did very well with a Top Five landing, but it was overshadowed by the negative press generated with another tune, the controversial “One in a Million.”
By this time, Adler's drug addiction was out of control so the band filled his seat with the Cult's former drummer, Matt Sorum. Keyboardist Dizzy Reed also came on board and the new crew went into the studio and came up with Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. Both albums proved successful for Guns N' Roses in the very early 1990s.
When Nirvana came along in 1992, suddenly everything changed for the band. Another line-up shift occurred with Gilby Clarke replacing Izzy Stradlin, while Axl Rose took his frustrations out publicly. In one instance, his behavior led to a riot in Montreal.
In 1993 came The Spaghetti Incident? which was a collection of punk tunes that didn't do so well. As a result, artistic differences led to something of a hiatus. As for the group's two main opposing forces Slash threw himself into other bands while Axl went underground.
Though he was being something of a recluse, Axl occasionally jammed with a group of friends – guitarist Dave Navarro and bassist Tommy Stinson, among them. The exclusion of his GNR mates in these sessions and the subsequent "Sympathy for the Devil" single resulted in a furthering dissolution of good will.
By 1996, Slash was totally out of the picture leaving Axl with his new crew for the soundtrack tune "Oh My God" and Live Era. By 2000, Robin Finck, Buckethead, Brian Mantia, and Paul Huge had joined Stinson and Reed behind Rose as the new GNR roster on a string of live performances.
Two years later, after a rough showing at the MTV Video Music Awards, the group toured through Asia and Europe without incident. Then, at the opening night of the North American run, Axl failed to appear in Vancouver and a fan riot followed.
Rumors continued to swarm about a new GNR record, but nothing ever materialized. By 2005, the mystery album had already eaten up over $13 million and myriad collaborators.
Finally, in 2008, Chinese Democracy emerged and debuted at number three on Billboard's Hot 200. Despite some positive reviews, Democracy failed to sell very well and the supporting tour suffered from a bad case of Axl Rose.
