About the Band Journey

The two people most associated with the rock band Journey are American Idol judge Randy Jackson and lead singer Steve Perry. Jackson played bass on one album and was present for a few Journey tour dates back in the mid-1980's.

While Jackson's work with Journey is often overstated, Perry's contribution to Journey is substantial; his iconic voice is synonymous with the band. Nonetheless, Perry was Journey's third singer and (as of 2011) they've used three more since his departure in 1998.

Journey started in 1973 in San Francisco when several Bay Area musicians got together to form a backup band for any established artist that needed one. They soon abandoned that idea and decided to make it on their own as a standalone act. Even without a strong frontman, Journey was able to land a record deal. They released three albums in the mid-1970s all of which floundered on the charts. Basically, the band was struggling to find an identity.

Journey's struggle came to an end in 1977 when they hired Steve Perry as their lead singer. With Perry as their frontman, Journey started churning out hits, recording platinum albums, and selling thousands of Journey concert tickets. Some of the band's most famous singles with Perry at the helm include "Wheel in the Sky," "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'," and "Any Way You Want It."

Journey hit their zenith in 1981 with the release of their album Escape and their single "Don't Stop Believin'." Escape went on to be certified nine times platinum and "Don't Stop Believin'" is now the top-selling catalog track in the history of iTunes.

The band toured extensively in the early 1980's, going on one Journey tour after another. After a few more albums and a few hiatuses, the band officially broke up in 1987. After a few brief reunions for one-off performances and the like, the band got back together in the mid-1990's to record the album Trial By Fire. Before they could launch a calendar of Journey concert dates, Perry injured his hip while hiking and all tour plans were canceled. The injury eventually led to the band replacing Perry with Steve Augeri who was eventually replaced by Filipino singer Arnel Pineda. As of 2011, the only original member still left in the band is lead guitarist Neal Schon.

Nearly four decades after forming, Journey is still recording hit records and touring all over the world. They are also one of the best selling and most popular American rock and roll bands of all-time. The critics haven't always been on Journey's side, but their melodic hard rock and relevant lyrics have endeared them to several generations of rock fans.
