About the Band Korn
James Shaffer, Reginald Arvizu, David Silveria, Brian Welch, and Jonathan Davis formed Korn in the early 1990s out of the ashes of L.A.P.D., a heavy metal band some of the members had been in previously. In 1993, the guys started recording and gigging around Huntington Beach, Calif. immediately drawing a crowd.
After a limited demo album release, Korn was signed to Epic Records and issued their self-titled debut in late 1994. It did pretty well which led to a tour with Biohazard and a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance.
Life Is Peachy, their sophomore set, came in 1996 and entered the Billboard album chart at number three, going on to sell over two million copies in the U.S. and earning a second Grammy nomination. A co-headlining spot on the 1997 Lollapalooza tour certainly didn't hurt the spreading of Korn's gospel.
While recording their third album, Korn produced a weekly online show, KornTV, to document the process. Follow the Leader hit streets in the summer of 1998 and featured a number of guests, including Fred Durst, Ice Cube, and Cheech Marin. The record debuted at the top of the Billboard album chart.
One single, "Freak on a Leash," garnered two Grammy nods with a win for Best Music Video, Short Form. That song's video also collected nine MTV Video Music Awards, with two wins. The Follow the Leader album went on to sell more than five million copies just in the U.S.
At the end of 1999, Korn's fourth collection came in Issues which, once again, debuted in the number one album slot ahead of both Dr. Dre and Celine Dion. A release party at New York's Apollo Theatre found the group playing the album in its entirety with a simulcast on radio. The band toured pretty consistently for a year and a half in support of Issues.
It wouldn't be until mid-2002 that Korn's fifth album, Untouchables, would be released. Possibly due to Internet piracy, the set debuted at number two on Billboard's album chart rather than number one. Untouchables marked a more experimental style for Korn, a mash-up of Helmet and Metallica with some other touches. The single “Here to Stay” won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
In late 2003, after more Internet leaks, the self-produced Take a Look in the Mirror was issued. Once again the group changed up their styles and themes. The “Did My Time” single mirrored the Grammy success of “Here to Stay.” A greatest hits collection followed in 2004.
With the completion of their Sony obligations, Korn struck a unique, all-encompassing deal with Virgin Records that would lump touring, merchandise, licensing, and record sales into one big pot to be split between the parties.
The first offspring of the new partnership, See You on the Other Side, emerged in late 2005. It stayed within the Billboard top 50 for 34 weeks in a row on the strength of singles like "Twisted Transistor" and “Coming Undone.” A supporting tour included Mudvayne and 10 Years, and the band's Family Values Tour brought the Deftones, Evanescence, Flyleaf, and others along for the ride. During their European run, Davis became ill leading to the tour being canceled.
In December of 2006, drummer Silveria began an indefinite hiatus from the group. As a result, Korn performed on MTV Unplugged, the results of which were evidenced in the MTV Unplugged: Korn album.
An untitled album came out in 2007 wrapping up Korn's contract with Virgin. After a number of sub drummers, Ray Luzier was picked to replace Silveria.
As the decade worn on, a live DVD -- Korn: Live in Montreux 2004 -- was released along with a second greatest hits collection -- Playlist: The Very Best of Korn. They also continued touring the globe hitting festivals from Ohio to the UK.
With a new deal at Roadrunner Records in place, Korn III: Remember Who You Are was offered up in mid-2010. The group hit the road for the Music As a Weapon V tour with Disturbed, Sevendust, and In This Moment.
