About Luis Miguel

Luis Miguel is a Latin pop star who has achieved worldwide fame for his Spanish-language albums. He's known as "El Sol de Mexico," or "The Sun of Mexico," as well as the "Latin Frank Sinatra." Arguably Latin America's most important and most successful singer, the Puerto Rican born Miguel has also attained tremendous success in the United States as well as on the continents of Africa and Asia. It was reported that when Saddam Hussein was captured a Miguel album was found among his possessions. Regardless of where he performs, fans flock to Luis Miguel concerts in record numbers.

Miguel was born on April 19, 1970 in San Juan, Puerto Rico but was raised in Mexico. Although he goes by Luis Miguel, his full name is Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri. His father was a singer and his mother was an actress. For a while, Miguel's father served as his manager but that ended bitterly in 1987. The Latin crooner eschews interviews and award shows. He tries very hard to keep his personal life private which can be difficult considering he's one of the world's biggest singing stars.

Miguel began his singing career quite early in life. He released his first album in 1981 when he was just 11-years old. He won his first Grammy Award when he was 15. Miguel has released dozens of albums which have sold more than 60 million copies worldwide. Two of his most famous albums are "Romance" and "Segundo Romance." Both records have been certified platinum in the U.S. making Miguel the first Latin artist to achieve such a feat. Another major Miguel album, "Cómplices" (2008), sold more than 320,000 in its first day of release. His 2006 release, "Navidades," was the first Christmas album to be nominated for a Grammy Award in a pop category.

Miguel is also the first Latin artist to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He received the honor when he was just 26-years old. He was also the only Latin artist to appear in the 1995 TV special "Sinatra: 80 Years My Way." A year earlier, Sinatra invited Miguel to appear on his album "Duets II." The two legendary performers sang the classic, "Come Fly with Me."

Besides selling millions of albums, the Latin superstar has also sold hundreds of thousands of Luis Miguel tickets. His numerous Luis Miguel tours have been a resounding success both at the box office and with critics. His 1999-200 world trek, "Amarte Es Un Placer Tour," consisted of 104 concerts and attracted an estimated 1.5 million fans. At the time it was the highest grossing tour ever by a Latin American artist. Miguel would go one to break his own record with his 2005 "Mexico En La Piel Tour."
