About Mariah Carey

R&B singer Mariah Carey is one of the most successful American artists of all-time. Worldwide, Carey has sold more than 175 million albums, singles and videos. According to the recording industry, she's the third best-selling female artist of all-time in the United States. She's second for the most number-one singles with 18 (Carey trails only The Beatles who have 21), and she's the only performer to have a number-one single in every year of the 1990's. All together, her songs have held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 79 weeks.

Carey was born in Long Island, New York in 1969. Her mother was an opera singer and a vocal coach and eventually taught her how to sing. Carey's father was an aeronautical engineer but practically abandon his family after divorcing Carey's mother when Mariah was three-years-old. The singer's big break came in 1988 when she met record executive Tommy Mottola at a party. The two would later marry (1993) and divorce (1997).

In 1990, Carey released her self-titled debut album. In the next two decades, Carey would release 11 more studio albums, and four compilation albums. Six of Carey's studio albums have reached number one. Her bestselling album was 1993's Music Box.

In 2001, Carey departed Columbia Records and signed with EMI's Virgin Records. That summer it was reported that Carey had a nervous breakdown brought on from being overworked. She emerged from the breakdown with the semi-autobiographical movie, Glitter. The movie, as well as Carey's acting, was universally panned. Due to the poor performance of the movie's soundtrack, Virgin Records bought out the rest of Carey's contract. She then signed with Island Records. After another mediocre offering, Charmbracelet (2002), Carey returned to the top of the charts with 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi.

Carey has an amazing voice that has a five-octave range. She's also capable of singing in the "whistle register" or the highest register a voice can sing. Carey is also known for her ability to sing melisma, which is the technical term for what American Idol judges call "runs." In addition to signing, Carey has co-written and produced most of her material.
