About the Band Steely Dan
Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. While the band is well deserving of the honor it's interesting to note that Steely Dan, the very antithesis of rock and roll stars, are now immortalized alongside the type of artists they had ridiculed and spurned throughout their career.
The two main members of Steely Dan, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, met at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. The two immediately hit it off and started playing music together. They played in many bands while attending college including one with Chevy Chase on drums.
After graduating, the duo moved to Brooklyn to break into the music business. One of their earliest projects was the soundtrack to a Richard Pryor movie called "You've Got to Walk It Like You Talk It or You'll Lose That Beat." Then in 1971, Barbra Streisand recorded one of their songs, "I Mean To Shine," for her "Barbra Joan Streisand" album.
In the early 1970's, Fagen and Becker moved to Los Angeles to be staff songwriters for a record company. It didn't take long before producers realized that their compositions were too complicated for their artists—their songs were as hard as steel to play. So at the behest of management, Fagen and Becker formed their own band. They named their group Steely Dan after a sex toy that was referenced in a William S. Burroughs novel.
Steely Dan thrived in the 1970's releasing seven great albums: Can't Buy a Thrill (1972), Countdown to Ecstasy (1973), Pretzel Logic (1974), Katy Lied (1975), The Royal Scam (1976), Aja (1977), and Gaucho (1980). The last album is famous for showcasing Fagen and Becker's extreme perfectionism. To record the seven-track opus, Fagen and Becker used 42 studio musicians and 11 engineers.
The band broke up in 1981 and then reunited in 1993. During the split, Fagen and Becker both remained active in the music business. Meanwhile, their albums were attracting a whole new generation of fans. After reuniting, Steely Dan released "Two Against Nature" in 2000 and then "Everything Must Go" in 2003. The former was adored by fans and critics alike.
From 1972 to 1974, the band sold thousands of Steely Dan tickets. Then in 1975 the band stopped touring. They did resume selling concert tickets in the early 1990's. Furthermore, the years 2009 and 2011 both saw a Steely Dan tour.
While Steely Dan blended several styles of music they are famous for combining rock and jazz. Some of the most famous Steely Dan songs are "Reelin' in the Years," "My Old School," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Black Friday," "Peg," and "Hey Nineteen."
