About The Who
The Who are an English rock band that first came
to prominence in the 1960s. They grew in stature to become one
of the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band's of All-Time. Except for
periods of retirement from 1983 to 1988 and from 1990 to 1995,
the band have continued to perform as a live act and have recently
reentered the studio.
Noted for the dynamism of their performances and
for their thoughtful and art-influenced music, they are also
acknowledged as having been rock pioneers, popularising, along
with contemporaries The Kinks, the power chord and the rock
opera (most notably Tommy) under the leadership of Pete Townshend.
The Who are on a world tour, as of June 2006,
that will last into 2007.
The Who are #8 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of
Hard Rock and #9 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Rock 'n' Roll.
The Who Today
Townshend and Daltrey have finished recording
a new album, tentatively titled WHO2, which is currently set
for release in October of 2006. It will be their first full
studio album of new material since 1982's It's Hard. The new
album will feature songs inspired by the Beslan school hostage
crisis and contain the band's first mini-opera since "Rael"
on 1967's The Who Sell Out. Excerpts from the mini-opera, called
"Wire and Glass", will be released on an EP July 10th
internationally."Mirror Door", the first song from
the new album, had its first play on BBC Radio 2, on The Ken
Bruce Show at 10:00 on the 8th June 2006.
A North American leg of The Who's current tour
has been announced and dates have been confirmed. The band will
travel through America September 7th - October 10th and November
5th - December 5th.
Pete Townshend has said that he hopes to finish
The Who tour with a gig at Glastonbury Festival 2007.
The Who On Tour in 2006 and
2007
The Who's new 2006 tour is currently scheduled
to make 17 stops across the U.S. and Canada. The Who will then
head for Europe, Japan, Australia and South America for more
concerts.
The legendary group promises to play many of their
classic Who tunes and tracks from a new mini-rock opera called
Wire & Glass that will be featured on Who 2, the Who's first
studio album since 1982's It's Hard, which is set to hit stores
on Oct. 23.
"For the first time in 25 years we are returning
to the U.S.A. with great live music--the entire catalogue of
our old stuff--and new music. We have a great new video show,
a new mini-opera and plans to do some special shows with special
themes," said Townshend in a recent statement.
