About the Trans Siberian Orchestra

For music lovers, one of the best ways to pass the time during the holiday season is through taking in a Trans-Siberian Orchestra performance.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) is a rock orchestra, formed in 1996 by Paul O’Neill, Jon Oliva, Robert Kinkel and Al Pitrelli. The group draws on a range of musical influences, including progressive rock, heavy and symphonic metal and classical music. They are most well-known for their ability to riff on traditional Christmas classics, which are among their most popular bodies of work.

TSO puts on an elaborate live concert, complete with a light show and loads of pyrotechnics to accompany their actual musical performance, all of which takes 15 hours to set up.

The name of the group came from Russia’s Trans-Siberian Railway, which the group says connects a variety of different cultures that would otherwise remain separate from one another and the rest of the world. They likened this culture clash to music and thus, the group’s ability to mesh different musical types together was born.

TSO began touring in 1999, starting with a few concerts in major U.S. cities. However, the group’s popularity and demand proved to be overwhelming, which led to the formation of two separate groups touring simultaneously. This meant more ground could be covered for each tour during the busy holiday season. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra groups tour from the beginning of November to the first week of January and are known as TSO East and TSO West.

TSO has only released one non-Christmas themed album to date, 2000’s Beethoven's Last Night, which was a concept album about classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven’s last night before his death. For their Christmas-themed albums, Trans-Siberian Orchestra records in the studio with a 60-piece orchestra and a full choir. When the groups go on tour, 14 vocalists, 14 musicians and two narrators accompany them. TSO’s best-selling album to date is Christmas Eve and Other Stories.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra was founded in 1996 in New York City by composers Paul O'Neill and Robert Kinkel, and Savatage lead singer Jon Oliva. They are well known for their Christmas music but have branched out from there recently.
