About Disney On Ice

In the Disney on Ice show, the characters are the stars while the actual skaters remain anonymous. That's the Disney way of keeping the magic alive. With eight simultaneous productions touring the world, magic has an integral role. While new shows are unveiled and tested in the U.S. for two years, they eventually travel to Asia, Europe, Australia, South America, and the Middle East.

Having started as Walt Disney's World on Ice in 1981, the newly christened Disney on Ice has been delighting audiences since 1998. Almost every Disney property has been turned into an ice show at one time or another, from Pinocchio to Pocahontas, Sports Goofy to Snow White.

The longest-running production is Mickey & Minnie's Amazing Journey, which began in 1995 and is still on the road. Other mainstays include 100 Years of Magic, which started up in 1999, and Beauty and the Beast, which kicked off in 2001.

Shows currently on the circuit include 2002's Princess Classics. Act one tells the tales of Jasmine, Aurora, Ariel, Mulan, Snow White, and Belle, while Cinderella gets act two all to herself.

Hosted by Tinker Bell, Princess Wishes debuted in 2006. It tells tales of Aurora, Jasmine, Ariel, Belle, and other Disney princesses. In 2008, Worlds of Fantasy joined the fray with stories from The Little Mermaid, Cars, The Lion King, and Tinker Bell. This was the final show to include Mickey Mouse's long-time voice actor, Wayne Allwine who died in 2009.

For 2009, the latest offering was Let's Celebrate, which finds Mickey and Minnie in a winter wonderland, various villains in a Halloween hunt, Wonderland's Alice at a “very merry unbirthday” party, and a princess ball featuring Tiana, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and others.

A new production for Toy Story 3 was unveiled in September, 2010 (written January, 2011)

There are currently seven different shows skating under the banner of Disney on Ice. Five of those shows are touring North America—Princess Classics, Mickey & Minnie's Magical Journey, Princess Wishes, Toy Story 3, and Let's Celebrate. The other two are playing to audiences in Europe—100 Years of Magic and Disney on Ice Presents: A Disneyland Adventure.

Each show features great ice skating, family fun, and of course, your favorite Disney characters. For years, tickets for all the Disney on Ice shows have been coveted by kids of all ages, the young at heart, and those with vivid imaginations.

Due to having multiple touring companies, Disney on Ice shows are constantly visiting North American cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Toronto. If a Disney on Ice show isn't playing in your city chances are good one is on its way.

The Disney on Ice franchise debuted in 1981 under the name "Walt Disney's World on Ice." The show adopted its current name in 1998. All of Disney's ice shows are produced by Feld Entertainment.

Below, BSTLV looks at the Disney on Ice shows touring the United States and Canada in 2011.

Princess Classics
Princess Classics features the great Tinker Bell as well as a slew of Disney princesses—Jasmine, Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, Snow White, and Belle. The entire second act is dedicated to Cinderella. Princess Classics whisks audiences away to such exotic locales as a French castle, an Arabian palace, and ancient China.

This production opened in August 2002 and is centered on the stories of Disney’s most famous princesses, including: Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Snow White, Jasmine, Mulan and Aurora. The first act focuses on all except for Cinderella, who gets the entire second act devoted to her story.

Mickey & Minnie's Magical Journey
Currently the longest running Disney on Ice show, Mickey & Minnie's Magical Journey takes our favorite mice to Hawaii, Africa, "Under the Sea," and Neverland. If you haven't already guessed, the Magical Journey features the characters and settings from the classic movies Lilo & Stitch, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan.

Princess Wishes
Princess Wishes is similar to Princess Classics in that it includes all the Disney princess but differs in that it features them in truncated versions of their respected fairy tales. During the production's "Under the Sea" number, a few lucky fans are invited to participate in the show by riding a boat that glides across the ice.

Toy Story 3
The newest Disney on Ice show, Toy Story 3 is based on the animated movie of the same name. Despite its title, the show also features moments from the first two Toy Story movies. This endearing production features all the memorable characters from the Toy Story franchise including Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie.

Let's Celebrate
Let's Celebrate is billed as "one colossal party on ice." It's a fitting name as this show pays tribute to celebrations, holidays, and festivals from all over the world. Let's Celebrate is also the ice show to attend if you want to see as many Disney characters as possible. The production not only features Mickey and Minnie, but heroes, princesses, and villains from nearly 20 Disney movies.

Celebrations: This show opened in fall 2009 and is touted as one big party on the ice. There is a winter-themed Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Disney villains taking center ice for some Halloween haunting, and an elaborate royal ball with the princesses of Disney, including the newest addition, Princess Tiana.

Characters from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Jungle Book and more take to the ice for Celebrations.

100 Years of Magic: Also known as The Magical World of Disney on Ice, this production, which opened in September 1999, mixes up the best of Disney, with characters from Aladdin, Pinocchio, Pocahontas, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Toy Story, Lilo & Stitch, Finding Nemo, Mulan, The Incredibles and many more.
