About the King of Country, Mr. George StraitYou don't become the King of Country unless you earn it and George Strait has certainly done that all the while holding fast to his love of traditional country music over the course of his career. With a solid blend of honky tonk and Western swing, Strait has given country music both root and wings. He even set a world record for chart-topping singles when he reached a total of 57 in 2010. He's also tallied album sales of some 70 million units in the U.S. It all started when Strait's 1981 debut single “Unwound” climbed the Billboard charts. At the time, a neo-traditional movement was underway within the country music world. The accompanying album, Strait Country, was considered by many to be a breakthrough both for Strait and the genre as a whole because it signaled a shift away from the pop-country stylings that had become prevalent. With his sophomore set, Strait from the Heart, Strait managed his first number one single with "Fool Hearted Memory." Another song on the record, "Amarillo by Morning," became an instant classic and, in the ears of some critics, one of the greatest country songs in history. Throughout the first half of the 1980s, Strait enjoyed a 17-song string of number one singles. The full albums also fared very well, many topping charts as well, including Right or Wrong, Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind, and Something Special. Strait did so well in his first few years on the job that he warranted a greatest hits collection. That successful run continued for the rest of the decade with hit records such as Ocean Front Property, If You Ain't Lovin' You Ain't Livin', and Beyond the Blue Neon. Awards also started flowing in including Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year from the Country Music Awards. As the decade turned and the 1990s began, Strait maintained his successful ticket and album sales while making a shift in his artistry to a slicker sound. His first two attempts, Livin' It Up and Chill of an Early Fall, each yieled multiple chart-topping cuts, although his cover of "Lovesick Blues" ended his streak of top 10 hits at 31. His next outing, Holding My Own, also floundered and failed to spawn any hit singles. However, because of Strait's role in the film Pure Country, the film's soundtrack became the most successful release he'd had. It did so by stepping outside the country charts and climbing all the way up to number six on Billboard's Hot 200 album chart. Riding that momentum, Strait issued a string of hit records in Easy Come, Easy Go, Lead On, Blue Clear Sky, Carrying Your Love with Me, and One Step at a Time. They all topped the country charts with Carrying Your Love with Me also topping the Billboard Hot 200. By 1995, it was time for a look-back and Strait Out of the Box, a four-disc career retrospective, was released. The collection became the second best-selling box set in music history. More awards and accolades filled the 1990s. Strait ended the decade with Always Never the Same in 1999. With a new century upon him, Strait offered up an eponymous album that missed the platinum mark and lacked any hits. The follow-up, 2001's The Road Less Traveled, corrected course to spawn two number one songs. Strait's Honkytonkville was cited by critics as "a fiery set of hard country" in a “mixture of the old Strait with his modern, superstar self." However, it was Somewhere Down in Texas that put Strait on the Adult Contemporary charts for another cross-genre success story. Marking the 25th anniversary since his first release, Strait issued It Just Comes Natural in 2006. It met with positive reviews, but only did moderate business in terms of sales. Then, in 2008, Troubadour debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 – a first for Strait. The next year, Strait was honored by the Academy of Country Music with the Artist of the Decade Award. Never resting on his laurels, he also released Twang. Then, in 2010, more laurels came when Strait was put at the top of Billboard's list of the 25 greatest country artists of the past 25 years.
