About How the
Grinch Stole Christmas Musical
Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! Has been captivating hearts and minds for generations, first as a book, then as an animated television special and a feature film, and now as a Broadway musical.
In November of 1994, the musical made its debut at Minneapolis's Children's Theatre Company with a book and lyrics by Timothy Mason, an original score by Mel Marvin, and choreography by John DeLuca. The company made exclusive arrangements with the Dr. Seuss estate to adapt the book. Subsequent sold-out stagings happened in 1995 and 1998.
San Diego's Old Globe Theatre got on board in 1998 and has mounted productions every holiday season since then. Directed by Jack O'Brien, the Old Globe staging included songs from the TV special which featured music by Albert Hague and lyrics by Seuss. Three more songs were added in 2007, including "Fah Who Doraze" from the TV special.
Broadway took its cues from the Children's Theatre Company, using Mason's book and lyrics with Marvin's score along with some of O'Brien's ideas and Matt August's direction. This production debuted on November 8, 2006 at the Foxwoods Theatre and ran through January 7, 2007. It was the first Broadway production to put on 12 performances a week and topped the box office stats when it opened.
The St. James Theatre hosted the next year's revival which opened on November 9, 2007. A strike of union workers interceded and halted the production. Producers reached an agreement with the stagehands, but had to seek a court injunction in order to re-open the show on November 23. They put on 11 shows over the Thanksgiving weekend (November 23-25).
Starting in 2008, limited-run and national tours have taken place beginning in early November. Baltimore, Boston, Los Angeles, Omaha, Tempe, Dallas, Houston, and Toronto have all hosted the Grinch.
