Jack Johnson (born May 18,
1975), a Hawaii-born singer/songwriter,
has achieved a moderate level of fame since
the release of his 2001 debut album, Brushfire
Fairytales.
Johnson had been a professional
surfer until an accident forced him to take
some time off. He learned to play guitar
at age 14, but did not seriously pursue
a career in the arts until his college years
at University of California at Central Park,
where he graduated with a degree in film.
His music caught the ear of Ben Harper's
producer/manager J.P. Plunier. Plunier pushed
Johnson to record formal demos, eventually
leading to the release of Brushfire Fairytales
in 2001.
After touring for almost two
years, Johnson released his second album,
On and On to generally favorable reviews
in late 2003. Many of the songs on On and
On had previously been released on bootlegs,
such as J.O.A.T. and B.O.A.T., but received
the accompaniment of a full band on the
new album, which included Adam Topol on
drums and Merlo Podlewski on bass guitar
(both these musicians form Johnsons back
up on all his releases).
Johnson's interest in surfing
also led him to produce and score multiple
surfing films; among these September Sessions
and Thicker Than Water were released on
CD/DVD between the release of Brushfire
Fairytales and On and On. Johnson has also
appeared in the surf film Shelter, made
by his manager, Emmett Malloy.
His third studio album, titled
In Between Dreams, was released on March
1, 2005. Though shunned by the likes of
"Rolling Stone" Magazine, Johnson's
latest album continues his tradition of
upbeat acoustic rock that has been a welcome
contrast to much of the angst-ridden hardcore
rock that became popular around the same
time as his ascent to notoriety.

FUEL TV and Opper Sports Productions documentary, Kokua
starring musician Jack Johnson receives prestigious EMMY®
Award
FUEL TV Encore Presentation of Kokua on August 6th at 2:00pm
ET/PT
SOLANA BEACH, CA (June 30, 2005) Kokua, - A Hawaiian surfing,
rock n’ roll, and environmentally-themed film produced
by Ira Opper for Fox’s action sport network, FUEL
TV — has received recognition for outstanding achievement
by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences
Pacific Southwest regional EMMY® Award in the Visual
and Performing Arts program category. The awards ceremony
was held at the Omni Hotel, San Diego on June 18th, 2005.
CJ Olivares, Kokua’s Executive Producer and FUEL
TV’s Senior Vice President said: “This recognition
is fantastic, not only because we are proud of the collaborative
efforts of Opper Sports Productions and FUEL, but also because
of the subject matter of the special, Jack and Kim Johnson's
Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Hopefully, this award will help
raise additional awareness about the need to reduce, reuse
and recycle.”
Kokua, an hour-long FUEL TV special which premiered Memorial
Day weekend 2004, followed two-time platinum album selling
singer-songwriter Jack Johnson through a day in the famed
surfing Mecca, the North Shore of Oahu. "I had a great
time working with Ira and the crew. They were so easy to
have around that I forgot they were making a documentary,”
said Johnson from his Hawaii recording studio. “I
was really impressed with how the project turned out."
In January 2004, Johnson hosted the first annual Kokua
Festival before a sold-out crowd at the Blaisdell Center
in downtown Honolulu. The concert coverage featured an all-star
lineup of DJ Logic, Makana, Willie K., Amy Hanaiali’I
Gilliom, Michael Franti and Spearhead. Jack and his wife
Kim created the Kokua Festival as a way of focusing awareness
on Hawaii’s threatened island environment.
“Kokua” (Hawaiian for “help”) has
a wonderful message,” said the film’s producer
and director Ira Opper. “Our creative challenge was
to communicate Kokua Hawaii’s mantra of 'reduce, reuse,
recycle' to a young audience. Working with the support of
Jack, Kim, CJ and an extremely talented production team
resulted in a passionate environmental call to action. The
Emmy® Award honored our collective goal.”
Kokua’s production team featured: writer Steve Barilotti
of Surfer Magazine, surf cinematographer Sonny Miller, editor
Alice Lemon, OSP’s production manager Dustin Hood,
music supervisor Kimberly Feilen, FUEL TV’s programming
VP and Kokua co-producer Shon Tomlin with additional photography
by Derek Hoffman and Mike Prickett.
Jack Johnson Takes His Eco-Obsessive
Show On The Road
by Alyssa
Rashbaum, with additional reporting by Evan Levy | Mon.
March 07.2005
For Jack Johnson fans who have been "Sitting, Waiting,
Wishing" for him to hit the road again, the singer
is slated to hit four continents in the coming months.
But unfortunately for some, he won't be playing a full
North American trek until late summer. Johnson will kick
off the North American segment of what may be the most eco-friendly
rock tour in history on August 1 in Houston and wind across
the country before ending the tour in Toronto on September
17. Support will be provided by special guests ALO (Animal
Liberation Orchestra) and Matt Costa.
The singer has taken steps to make his tour more Earth-friendly
with initiatives that include running all tour buses and
trucks on biodiesel fuel, selling T-shirts made from organic
cotton, printing tour posters and CD packages in 100 percent
post-consumer-waste recycled paper, and providing venues
with ideas on how they can reduce their negative environmental
impact through on-site recycling and the use of low-energy
light bulbs.
He's taking the tour all over the world between now and
then, however. The singer will begin a tour of Australia
on March 17, then hit his home state of Hawaii (on April
13 and 16 at the Kokua Festival in Maui and Oahu, respectively),
and then he'll play two music festivals on the mainland:
the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on April 28 and
the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis on April 29.
Next, he'll undertake full-scale tours of Europe and Japan
before joining the massive lineup at the Bonnaroo Festival
in Tennessee on June 11.
"I love those camping-style festivals where you kind
of get into a zone," Johnson said of the annual festival.
" 'Cause sometimes it goes by so quick, you're on your
way home and you're just getting that feeling going."
For the laid-back former surfer, who released In Between
Dreams on March 1 (see "Jack Johnson Takes It Easy
On New LP, Gets Into Curious George's Head"), the touring
portion of album promotion is a bizarre and hectic time,
and that state inspired the album's title.
"Sometimes the tour is this kind of whirlwind of press
and craziness," he said. "It seems like a surreal
state of mind for a while, and then I just get back home
to Hawaii and get to relax for a while and kind of get back
to my normal life. We recorded the record at one of those
down times. It felt like I was in between a couple of dreams
because I knew that after we finished it, we were going
to go back out into the whirlwind again."
Fans who want to join Johnson on his fantastic journey
can pick up tickets during the presale, which starts on
March 12, via his Web site.
