Kenny Chesney Bio
Tennessee native Kenny Chesney was an athlete in high school who didn't start thinking about music until after he graduated. But Santa brought him the Christmas gift of a guitar and changed his trajectory.
While in college, Chesney became a fixture at local Johnson City music clubs and even recorded a demo tape that sold 1,000 copies. The proceeds went toward a new guitar. Within two years of graduating from college, Chesney had moved to Nashville and secured a songwriting deal that led to a record deal a year later.
His debut record, In My Wildest Dreams, was released in April of 1994, but didn't do very well thanks to minimal support from a floundering, independent label. For his next outing, Chesney signed to a new company and issued All I Need to Know in 1995.
Two singles, "Fall in Love" and "All I Need to Know," cracked the country top 10 and announced Chesney's arrival in the genre. The follow-up in 1996, Me and You, would push his momentum forward even further with two cuts hitting number two on the country charts. For his effort, Kenny won the 1997 Academy of Country Music's New Male Vocalist of the Year prize.
Continuing his annual release schedule, Chesney released I Will Stand in 1997. The lead single, "She's Got It All," topped the charts for three weeks. Subsequent tracks also did well, extending the record's reach into the next year.
For 1999, Everywhere We Go would be the order of the day yielding two chart-topping songs in "How Forever Feels" and "You Had Me from Hello" that helped push the set into platinum-selling territory. For a change of pace and a little break, Chesney compiled his first Greatest Hits collection in 2000 that also included four new tunes.
Chesney was back at it for No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems in 2002. The album's second single, “The Good Stuff,” stayed at number one for seven weeks and became Billboard's country song of the year. The video for “Young,” the album's lead track, won CMT awards for Video of the Year and Male Video of the Year. The ACM also bestowed Top Male Vocalist of the Year and Single Record of the Year (for “The Good Stuff”) honors upon him.
The following year found Chesney joining the legions of artists to make a holiday record with All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan, but then it was back to business in 2004 for When the Sun Goes Down.
First single "There Goes My Life" spent another seven weeks at the top of the chart and won Male Video of the Year. The album's title track also hit number one and a video for the third single, "I Go Back," made Chesney a back-to-back winner in the Male Video of the Year category.
At the CMAs, Chesney won Album of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. Over at the American Music Awards, he brought home a statue for Artist of the Year.
The release of Be as You Are (Songs from an Old Blue Chair) and The Road and the Radio plus the ensuing Somewhere in the Sun Tour would fill 2005. More number one singles came, as did more accolades. He followed that up in 2006 with Live: Live Those Songs Again.
In 2007, Chesney was deemed Entertainer of the Year by the CMA for the third time in four years. He also issued Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates which included steel drums, giving the album an island air. Tracks like "Never Wanted Nothing More” and "Better as a Memory" continued Chesney reign at the top of the country charts.
Lucky Old Sun was Chesney's contribution to 2008, along with the number one single "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven." Supporting the release, Chesney embarked on the Sun City Carnival Tour in 2009.
After issuing a second greatest hits collection in May of 2010, Chesney offered up Hemingway's Whiskey in September of the same year.
