Indy 500 Tickets
The Indianapolis 500 is billed, and for good reason, as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." The 500-mile race is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana and it usually takes place the Sunday before Memorial Day. The first time Indy 500 tickets were sold was May 30, 1911. Ray Harroun took the checkered flag in front of 80,000 race fans. The Indy 500 is part of the IZOD IndyCar Series and even though that circuit is dwarfed in popularity by NASCAR, the Indy 500 is America's biggest race. It far eclipses NASCAR's premiere event, the Daytona 500.
The Indianapolis Speedway, also known as "The Brickyard," is a relatively flat, two-and-a-half-mile track. It's shaped like a rectangle with rounded corners. The track has two 5/8 mile long straight-aways, two 1/8 mile straight-aways, and four 1/4 mile turns. The facility has permanent seating for 257,000. After adding the infield, the speedway can accommodate more than 400,000 making it the highest-capacity sports venue on the globe.
Past Indy 500 winners include Helio Castroneves, Dario Franchitti, and Dan Wheldon. A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears hold the record for the most Indianapolis 500 wins with four. The track also hosts NASCAR's Brickyard 400 and Formula One's United States Grand Prix. No driver has won two or more of Indy's trio of big races and only Juan Pablo Montoya has competed in all three (he won the 2000 Indy 500).
