About Ozzy
Few people can think of heavy metal and not think of Ozzy Osbourne. Alternately known as the "Prince of Darkness" and the “Godfather of Heavy Metal,” the former frontman for Black Sabbath was a pioneer in the genre.
From Ozzy's first band onward, his sound was a spin-off of the psychedelic rock of the late 1960s. Mixing dark lyrics with a heavy, blues-inspired musicality, the formula was set and codified in the song “Black Sabbath.”
With band mates Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath made fast inroads in the music industry. Sales were strong for both their eponymous debut and Paranoid, their second outing. Ozzy's drug-induced stupor didn't allow him to see the success. It also caused him to get kicked out of the band in 1979, with Ronnie James Dio stepping in.
Ozzy's solo effort, The Blizzard of Ozz (later to become the Ozzy Osbourne Band), did pretty well right out of the gate. His first two releases – Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman – both sold well thanks to strong writing and performing contributions from Bob Daisley and Randy Rhoads.
During the 1982 Madman tour, Rhoads was killed in a plane crash. Ozzy fell into a depression but took only a week off. The subsequent performances were culled for a live album, Speak of the Devil.
As Ozzy struggled to get sober, more records followed, including Bark at the Moon in 1983 and The Ultimate Sin in 1986. He was also the target of the first wave of lawsuits blaming metal musicians (and their music) for the actions of others. The case claimed that Ozzy's song "Suicide Solution" caused two teenagers to commit suicide. Ozzy won the suit, but continued his own battle against substance abuse.
In 1988, Ozzy found Zakk Wylde, the most promising replacement yet for Rhoads. Wylde's debut with the band came on No Rest for the Wicked.
The follow-up, 1991' No More Tears, saw Ozzy roll his success into the new decade to the tune of over four million records sold. Exposure on both MTV and radio certainly didn't hurt. Ozzy also won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. Claiming he was tired of the road, Ozzy embarked on the No More Tours retirement trek.
With the issuance of Ozzmosis in 1995, he change his mind and set out on The Retirement Sucks Tour. His greatest hits collection, The Ozzman Cometh, followed two years later, and the Ozzfest tours were also established beginning in '96.
After five years of no new material, Ozzy was back in 2001 with Down to Earth. Sales were moderate. In 2003, he partnered with former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted for a collaborative project. That year also saw Ozzy badly injured when he crashed his ATV, breaking his collar bone, eight ribs, and a neck vertebra.
He recovered in time to headline the 2004 Ozzfest. A box set, Prince of Darkness, dropped the following year and featured live performances, b-sides, demos, and other cuts. One disc contained a set of previously unreleased cover tunes.
The years between 2002 and 2005 also found Ozzy and family on an MTV reality show, aptly titled The Osbournes.
Another six-year drought between new studio albums ended with 2007's Black Rain. The record was a testament to his sober artistry: "I thought I'd never write again without any stimulation...But you know what? Instead of picking up the bottle I just got honest and said, 'I don't want life to go (to pieces).'”
Ozzy's Scream was released in June, 2010. Although Ozzfest skipped 2009, it was also on tap for a 2010 return.
