About Paul McCartney
Coming out of one of the most popular bands of all time – the Beatles – Paul McCartney managed to maintain a decent level of success as a solo artist. In the U.S., he enjoyed a string of nine chart-topping singles and seven chart-topping albums in the 1970s and 1980s. Though critics derided his work alongside wife Linda in Wings, the fans loved it. When sales started to wane in the late '80s, McCartney fired up the tour bus and mounted an incredibly successful run.
It all really started in the spring of 1970 with the release of McCartney just two weeks prior to Let It Be's release. The Beatles' break- up had been announced unexpectedly and tensions between the men were growing. Nevertheless, the solo effort climbed to number one in the U.S. and stayed there for three weeks.
Within a year or so, Paul and Linda pulled Wings together with former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine and drummer Denny Seiwell. Wild Life was issued in December of 1971 and didn't do well by any accounts. Former Grease Band guitarist Henry McCullough came on board, and the group got back to work.
In 1973, Red Rose Speedway made it two American number one albums. After a UK tour, McCullough and Seiwell departed, but not before McCartney's theme to the James Bond flick Live and Let Die cracked the Top 10 in both the U.S. and U.K.
Later in 1973, Band on the Run dropped. It quickly earned favor with both critics and audiences, selling more than three million copies along the way. A re-boot of Wings featured guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton just in time for 1975's hit Venus and Mars.
A year later, At the Speed of Sound followed and yielded two huge hits in "Silly Love Songs" and "Let 'Em In." The band embarked upon their first world tour, breaking sales records as they went. The triple live album Wings Over America resulted in 1976 which allowed the group to take a breather.
In late 1977, Wings issued what would become the best-selling UK single ever -- "Mull of Kintyre." They followed that up with a full set, London Town, in 1978. Back to the Egg dropped in 1979, but didn't spawn any real hits.
After McCartney was arrested in Japan for marijuana possession, Wings dissolved, with an official end date of April 27, 1981. Back in the UK, Paul bounced back with McCartney II. He also did some recording with Beatles' producer George Martin to make Tug of War for 1982. The critics were pleased and "Ebony and Ivory," McCartney's duet with Stevie Wonder, hit number one.
A collaborative trend was thus begun. McCartney teamed with Michael Jackson in 1983 for both "The Girl Is Mine" (from Jackson's Thriller) and "Say Say Say" (from McCartney's Pipes of Peace).
Dipping into the world of cinema in 1984, McCartney helmed his first film, Give My Regards to Broad Street. The soundtrack was a hit, but the film wasn't. The downward spiral crossed over to his albums with 1986's Press to Play and 1991's Choba B CCCP.
Partnering with Elvis Costello to pen tunes for both of their next projects, McCartney turned his luck around with 1989's Flowers in the Dirt. The collection met with a warm response, as did his world tour, documented on the double live Tripping the Live Fantastic in 1990.
Another live set came the following year in Unplugged, the first in the MTV series. McCartney's first classical offering, Liverpool Oratorio, was followed by Off the Ground in 1993. The ensuing tour did better than the record. Yet another concert album, Paul Is Live, came in late 1993. After a stab at ambient techno in 1994 under the guise of the Fireman, Paul issued another classical work, The Leaf.
For the next couple of years, McCartney focused on pulling together the Beatles' Anthology, which brought together a lengthy documentary and the box set of Beatles' outtakes and rarities. By 1997, he was back on the solo flight with the mostly acoustic Flaming Pie. It debuted at number two on both the U.S. and UK album charts. Around this time, he was knighted Sir Paul McCartney.
After his wife Linda passed away in 1998, Paul stayed out of the spotlight until late 1999 when he released Run Devil Run, which featured mostly cover tunes. Another attempt at electronica -- Liverpool Sound Collage – came the next year. Another year later, it was Driving Rain.
In 2002, one more live set, Back in the U.S. (for America) and Back in the World (for other territories) dropped. McCartney headed back into the studio with producer Nigel Godrich to formulate Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard for 2005.
Handling almost all of the instruments save the strings, Paul worked with producer David Kahne for 2007's Memory Almost Full. Then, a live CD/DVD combo came in 2009, Good Evening New York City.

Paul also played a number of songs
from his new album, but I don't know the names
of them. The stage was unbelievably cool, with
lights embedded in the floor, there was no opening
act, and McCartney played for 3 hours straight,
one set. His backup band was fantastic and Paul
played piano (which came up through the floor
when needed), guitar, and of course bass. I
highly recommend seeing this legend live in
his 2005 US tour. |
