Magnolias Theatre Reviews
When did popular become a dirty word? STEEL MAGNOLIAS
is a joy precisely because of it's universal appeal.
It is a pleasure to spend two hours in the utterly charming
company of these fine southern ladies. Don't let the
memory of the overwrought movie adaptation keep you
away. STEEL MAGNOLIAS was first, and remains, a tightly
constructed play. Taking place in four scenes (over
two acts) set in the town's leading beauty parlor it
tells it's story in beautiful, if appropriately leisurely,
fashion. The cast is sublime. Frances Sternhagen cannot
strike a false note. Rebecca Gayheart and Christine
Ebersole do a lovely job of subtley reminding us of
the steel of the title at the center of their characters.
Delta Burke, Marsha Mason and Lily Rabe lend seemless
and divine support. STEEL MAGNOLIAS is one show I wouldn't
mine checking back in with in a couple of months. As
with any good ensemble, the ladies of STEEL MAGNOLIAS
will only get better with time as these wonderful actresses
get the chance to fully inhabit the world Robert Harling
has created for them. Long may it run.

We saw Steel Magnolias in previews this past week. We
drove down and back in a snowstorm and it was worth
the trip!
Frances Sternhagen was remarkable! She clearly steals
the show as a function of the character, Clairee, but
more so her crisp and impeccable delivery. Delta Burke
was also quite impressive as Truvy making the character
her own. Also making quite an impression was Lily Rabe
as Annelle. Her growth and character change throughout
the piece is very well done. These three actresses made
me quite forget the screen portrayals, no small feat.
The other three actresses in the production suffer
from the ability to recall the screen personas and/or
a failure to reinvent the characters. I was initially
disappointed in Marsha Mason's portrayal of Ouiser,
though she did seem more comfortable in the second act.
The performance will no doubt grow more even with time.
I'm not sure the same can be said of Christine Ebersole
or Rebecca Gayheart's portrayals--it's tough to compete
with the "ghosts of performances past." Ebersole's
M'Lynn comes off as cold or unsympathetic. Her big scene
at the end almost seems to come from left field and
doesn't inspire the emotional response from the audience
one would expect. Gayheart's Shelby never seems to allow
us to become emotionally vested in her or her decisions.
Overall however this is an enjoyable evening in the
theatre and one I recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Steel Magnolias today. The
combination of cast members was exceptional, as was
their animation and chemistry. I've seen the movie many
times and it was exciting to see the combination of
new lines with existing dialogue. Two thumbs up!
