About The Addams Family Musical
What began as a cartoon, created by Charles Addams and printed in The New Yorker in 1938 until he died in 1988, The Addams Family was next a television series that only ran for two seasons, 1964-66. There was a brief spin-off, The Addams Family Fun-House, which aired in late 1972, and a 1977 reunion show, Halloween with the New Addams Family, which brought the original cast back together save an ailing Blossom Rock (Grandmama).
Two Addams-related films made bank in the '90s and a third was in the works when Raúl Juliá (the contemporary Gomez) passed away. There was also a direct-to-video piece that was supposed to be a pilot for a new series, but ended up not being and like that. But then there was a new version for television in 1998. Creatively titled The New Addams Family, it reworked a bunch of storylines and aired on Fox Family. Add in two animated shows, a pinball machine, and six – count them, SIX – video games, and, well, you see why buying some stock in the brand might have been a swell idea back in 1938.
In April of 2010, a musical Addams Family debuted on Broadway with Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia and Nathan Lane in the role of her passionate spouse Gomez. Music and lyrics for the show were written by Andrew Lippa with Marshall Brickman and Rick Ellis of Jersey Boys fame penning the book.
The plot centers around an 18-year-old Wednesday's (the Addams' daughter) new love for Lucas Beineke. On a dark and stormy evening, Lucas and his parents are on their way to the family estate for dinner. Wednesday's brother Pugsley misses the attention she once afforded him and begs her to torture him again like she used to. In the end, the Addams family must come to terms with Wednesday's romance and the “normal” Beineke family.
Krysta Rodriguez stars as the original Wednesday on Broadway, with other roles being filled by Terrence Mann (Mal Beineke), Carolee Carmello (Alice Beineke), Wesley Taylor (Lucas Beineke), Adam Riegler (Pugsley), Kevin Chamberlin (Uncle Fester), Zachary James (Lurch), and Jackie Hoffman (Grandmama).
The stage production team includes Olivier Award-winning director/designers Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, lighting by Tony Award-winning designer Natasha Katz, sound design by Acme Sound Partners, and puppetry by Obie Award Winner Basil Twist.
