About American IdiotAmerican Idiot is the seventh studio album by the American punk rock band Green Day. Music's most acclaimed rock group and Broadway's most honored creative team are bringing the theatrical event of 2010 to the St. James Theatre. Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong was thinking big when he penned the band's concept album American Idiot in 2004. With a storyline that carries through the whole record, American Idiot was created in the tradition of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, drawing from the inspiration of musical theatre. Armstrong imagined "that it would be staged or we'd create a film or something... we were thinking in terms that it kind of felt like scoring a movie." When director Michael Mayer, who had previously helmed Duncan Sheik's successful Spring Awakening, heard the record, he inquired about adapting it for the stage... and a project was born. The Berkeley Rep was the first to play host to American Idiot as a musical. After 10 days of previews, it opened on September 15, 2009 and became the top-grossing production ever for the theatre. The extended run ended in mid-November, and plans got underway to take the show to Broadway. Several of the Berkeley cast members made the transition, too, including John Gallagher Jr. as Johnny, Mary Faber as Heather, and Tony Vincent as St. Jimmy. Music supervisor and orchestrator Tom Kitt came along, as well, though Mayer brought much of his Spring Awakening team on board to round things out. The cast also performed at the 2010 Grammy Awards with Green Day. The one-act, through-sung piece opened at the St. James Theatre on April 20, 2010 after a few weeks of previews. Armstrong and Mayer penned the book. Armstrong also handled the lyrics, but shares music composition credits with band mates Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. Songs from other Green Day albums, such as 21st Century Breakdown, have also been adapted for the piece. The story, extrapolated from the album, revolves around Johnny, a disaffected teenager who runs off to the city to escape the suffocation of his parents and their suburban life. While he searches for meaning and excitement, one of his friends goes to Iraq and another stays put to deal with his pregnant girlfriend. In Johnny's exploration, he finds and loses love. He also finds a part of himself emerging that he comes to dislike. Reviews for both stagings have been mixed. The Los Angeles Times called the Berkeley production "kinetically entertaining in a way that intentionally reflects the shallow, media-saturated culture the album rails against." Charles Isherwood of the New York Times didn't love the Berkeley staging, but was won over by the Broadway presentation, saying it was "a pulsating portrait of wasted youth that invokes all the standard genre conventions ... only to transcend them through the power of its music and the artistry of its execution, the show is as invigorating and ultimately as moving as anything I’ve seen on Broadway this season.
