About War Horse Musical
Author Michael Morpurgo originally penned War Horse as a children's book in 1982. Then along came Nick Stafford who adapted the story for the stage.
Set at the onset of World War I in Devon, a young boy's horse, Joey, is shipped off to France to serve in both the British and German cavalries. Joey befriends another horse, Topthorn, as he struggles through the various atrocities of war on both sides of the battle. He is eventually left alone in No Man's Land. As fate would have it, young Albert has never forgotten his trusty steed and, though he can't yet join the army, Albert sets out to find Joey and bring him back home.
The show first premiered on October 17, 2007 in London's South Bank. The initial run at the Royal National-Olivier Theatre went to February 14, 2008 with a subsequent staging from September 10, 2008 to March 18, 2009.
A move to the New London Theatre in the West End followed on March 28 with the the official opening on April 3, 2009. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip even attended, marking their first trip to the theatre in four years.
On March 15, 2011, Broadway's Vivian Beaumont Theatre opened its own War Horse production. Originally slated to close on June 26, a warm critical reception and brisk ticket sales have led to an open-ended run.
Both the West End and Broadway productions were directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, with Toby Sedgwick handling the "horse choreography." When the 2011 Tony awards were handed out, War Horse was victorious in each of its five categories, including Best Play and Best Direction, along with a special award for the astounding puppetry of Handspring Puppet Company.
Other accolades include prizes from the Olivier Awards, Evening Standard Theatre Awards, Drama Desk Awards, the London Critics' Circle Theatre Awards, and more.
In addition to a production in Toronto planned to open in February of 2012, a national tour of the U.S. is set to begin in Los Angeles in June of 2012. Steven Spielberg directed a film adaptation of the story for a December, 2011 release.
