About A Little Night Music

Inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, the Broadway musical version was dubbed A Little Night Music after Mozart's Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major, Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Stephen Sondheim provided music and lyrics for Hugh Wheeler's book that details the romantic stories of several couples.

Debuting on Broadway in 1973, the original production ran for 12 previews and 601 performances over a year and a half. The staging, which starred Glynis Johns and Len Cariou, won a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and the Tony Award for Best Musical. A London production followed in 1975 with 406 performances.

London also staged a revival in 1989 that enjoyed 144 shows. A second London staging happened in 1995 at the Royal National Theatre starring Judi Dench who won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

A third, short-lived London revival ran from November 22, 2008 until March 8, 2009 at the Menier Chocolate Factory and then moved to the Garrick Theatre for another limited season that pushed through July, 2009. Hopping across the pond, this same production opened on Broadway in December, 2009 with a cast lead by Academy Award-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones and five-time Tony Award-winner Angela Lansbury.

Austria and Sweden both staged A Little Night Music during its original heyday, with Stockholm putting up a new production in 2010. In Paris, the Théâtre du Châtelet debuted a revival in February, 2010 starring Kristin Scott-Thomas and Leslie Caron, although Scott-Thomas was forced out by a foot injury and replaced by Greta Scacchi.

In addition to its success on the stage, a film adaptation was released in 1977 starring Elizabeth Taylor and Lesley-Anne Down. With a backdrop move from Sweden to Austria and some reworked music by Sondheim, the film was met with mixed reviews. In one of the more positive critiques, Variety called it "an elegant looking, period romantic charade."

The New York City Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Opera Australia have all incorporated the piece into their repertoire over the years. Opera Theatre of Saint Louis pulled in Isaac Mizrahi to direct and design a 2010 production starring Amy Irving.

Perhaps the best known musical number from A Little Night Music is “Send in the Clowns.” Sondheim penned it shortly before the original production as a vehicle for Glynis Johns who had a "small, silvery voice" and couldn't sustain long phrases and notes. It became Sondheim's biggest hit.
