About the Show Fences
In 1983, playwright August Wilson completed the sixth installment of his 10-part Pittsburgh Cycle when he penned Fences. Like the rest of the batch, Fences explores the experience of African-Americans within the urban environment and the race relations that go along with that theme.
Fences made its Broadway debut on March 26, 1987 at the 46th Street Theatre. James Earl Jones, Mary Alice, Frankie Faison, Courtney B. Vance, and Ray Aranha comprised the cast. The staging ran for 11 previews and 525 performances, closing on June 26, 1988.
The production earned multiple Tony Awards in 1987 including Best Play, as well as Best Actor for Jones a Tony Award, Best Featured Actress for Alice, Best Direction for Lloyd Richards. It also grabbed four Drama Desk awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama that same year.
The first Fences revival opened at the Cort Theatre on the Great White Way with previews beginning on April 14, 2010. The limited-run, 13-week engagement began on April 26, 2010. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis lead the cast directed by Kenny Leon.
The intimate drama centers around Troy Maxson, “a man torn between the glory of his past and the uncertainty of his future. Emboldened by pride and embittered by sacrifice, Troy is determined to make life better for future generations, even as he struggles to embrace the dreams of his own son.”
