About Wicked the MusicalIn 1995, Stephen Schwartz came across a novel by Gregory Maguire that re-imagined the story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of the witches involved. The book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, captured Schwartz's attention, leading him to spend three years trying to convince Maguire to let him adapt it into a musical. With the author's permission secured, Schwartz teamed up with Emmy Award-winning writer Winnie Holzman to create Wicked. He crafted the songs and lyrics; she penned the book. The new re-telling spins a different yarn than does the novel, though it does stick fairly close to Maguire's worldview. The troubled friendship between Galinda/Glinda (better known as the Good Witch of the North) and Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West) is the centerpiece of the tale. Though they share a love for the Wizard, they take polar positions on everything else. Wicked is set during the times before Dorothy came to Kansas and throughout her stay there. A series of readings helped the creators develop the project in its early stages. With Kristin Chenoweth in the role of Glinda and Stephanie Block as Elphaba (replaced by Idina Menzel in 2001), the kinks were worked out prior to a month-long run at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco in May of 2003. In addition to Schwartz and Holzman, the core production team consisted of director Joe Mantello, producer David Stone, choreographer Wayne Cilento, and set designer Eugene Lee. The San Francisco staging led to a five-month re-tooling period after which Wicked made its debut at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre with Joel Grey as the Wizard. Although theater critics greeted the show with mixed responses, the Tony Awards heaped 10 nominations and three wins upon Wicked's shoulders. Not to be outdone, the Drama Desk Awards piled on another six more awards. Enthusiastic fans around the world have helped Wicked break box office records. To become one of the two highest grossing shows on Broadway, Wicked takes in north of $1 million in weekly receipts. Stagings have been enjoyed in Germany, Japan, London, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Australia. A national touring company regularly makes its way across North America.
