About the Musical WickedDrawing its lines from Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Gregory Maguire's best-selling novel, Wicked the musical has taken Broadway by storm. The story treads the same path as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but traversed from the witches' perspective. Stephen Schwartz contributed songs and lyrics to a book by Emmy Award-winner Winnie Holzman. It was back in 1995 that Schwartz first stumbled into Maguire's novel. Three years later, he had persuaded the author to hand over staging rights. When Holzman came in, the two crafted a story that, while maintaining certain parts of Maguire's themes, took poetic license with the actual storyline. The setting for Wicked starts before Dorothy arrived in Kansas and continues once she arrives. It is a tale of friendship and struggle between Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, later Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. Though they see the world from opposite corners, they share a love interest. A series of readings helped the team evolve all of the elements of the play. Chenoweth was on board from the start with Stephanie J. Block in the Elphaba role before Menzel joined in 2001. Producer David Stone and director Joe Mantello rounded out the team along with choreographer Wayne Cilento and Tony Award-winning set designer Eugene Lee. Wicked originally premiered in San Francisco at the Curran Theatre in May of 2003. The Curran run only lasted a month before the retooling process kicked in. Five short months later, it was on stage at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre. The star-studded cast included Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Idina Menzel as Elphaba, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. Though critical reviews were initially mixed, the Tony Awards lavished 10 nominations and three prizes on the production. The Drama Desk Awards added another six trophies to the Wicked case. Fans were never quite as reticent, helping Wicked break box office tallies across the globe. Wicked has regularly topped $1 million each week in box office grosses to be one of the two highest grossing shows on Broadway. Los Angeles, London, Germany, San Francisco, Chicago, Australia, and Japan have all mounted or hosted productions and national tours continue in North America. When something is as successful as Wicked, it's never too long before spin-off adaptations are considered. In this case, a film project is said to be in development.
